Turn off package compression for WIM files in SCCM 2007

17 / 02 / 2014 by OS Deployment (OSD), SCCM 2007 Yorum yok / No Comments

As you know SCCM compresses package contents and creates a .PCK file to distribute the package to other sites. It works nice, but when it comes to big single files like WIM files, it spends hours to compress and decompress. And there is also no file size benefit when you compare the sizes of .pck and .wim files. For example one of my .wim is 8.5GB and it’s compressed .pck file is 8.42GB, and SCCM spends hours to prepare the PCK, child sites do the same to decompress.

Luckily, it is very easy to turn off package compression for WIM files in SCCM 2007.

Actually SCCM already has built-in list of file extensions in the registry, so all you need to do is adding .wim into it.

run the regedit and browse

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\SMS\Compression (64bit Windows.)

You’ll see the default extension list (DontCompressExts) is .cab;.zip;.arj;.rar;.jpg;.jpeg;.wma;.wmv;.mpg;.mpeg;.mov

And add ;.wim to DontCompressExts (Be careful to not add .wmi as me :p )

The extension list will be .cab;.zip;.arj;.rar;.jpg;.jpeg;.wma;.wmv;.mpg;.mpeg;.mov;.wim after your addition.

Hope it helps.
